History

In 1998, nine Singapore-based libraries, research, heritage, community and other institutions formed a committee to develop a databank on Chinese overseas. The committee also aims to foster greater cooperation among institutions and individuals in and outside Singapore who are interested in the subject. The eminent scholar Professor Wang Gungwu is Adviser to the committee.

Members of the committee have substantial holdings of published and unpublished materials on Chinese overseas. Most of these materials are made available to the general public, scholars, and researchers. Individual institutions continuously acquire and catalogue materials through purchase, exchange or donations. There is also a wealth of valuable primary materials in the possession of clan, civic and cultural associations, trade guilds and individual collectors.

The committee hopes to find out more about these materials and to facilitate their access to scholars and researchers. Institutions and persons with such materials are welcome to fill in the survey form in the HuayiNet World Wide Web (WWW) site, or contact us. Anyone with knowledge of institutions or individuals in possession of such materials is also welcome to contact us.

As an open society uniquely located in the major sea, air, and communication routes between the East and the West, Singapore is well-placed to promote information flow and exchange between people living in the different continents. The effort to develop the databank on Chinese overseas and the HuayiNet WWW site is one manifestation of this commitment.
