Restoring the Gods:
Paintings on glass from Lit Sung Goong temple in Cairns

Exhibition presenting six 19th c. Chinese paintings on glass from an old temple in Cairns. The paintings have been recently restored through a grant from Cairns City Council and the RADF.

In the end of 19th century, 30% of Cairns residents were Chinese and two temples were built to cater for their spiritual and social needs. One of them, Lit Sung Goong ("All Saints Temple') stood in the centre of the city from 1887 until 1964. The interior of the temple and ritual objects (more than 200 items) which have been imported from Guangdong Province in southern China, survived until today. This is an important collection but due to lack of proper facilities only a small part can be presented to the public.
