The National Archives of Singapore (NAS) was established in 1968 and became part of the National Heritage Board (NHB) in August 1993. NAS is mandated by the NHB Act 1993 to be the official custodian of the governments corporate memory. It is responsible for the permanent preservation of the nations records that are of national and historical significance. The NAS also acquires historical materials from private individuals and organizations to augment its official records.
The NAS also acquires records from Overseas Chinese archival institutions such as the Guangdong Provincial Archives and the Second Historical Archives of China. The former collections consist mainly of documents on Overseas Chinese activities in Guangdong Province covering the period from 1922 to 1981. The latter collections document the activities of the Chinese Overseas in Singapore and Malaya from 1908 to 1949. There are a total of 23 reels of microfilms for the two collections.
