National Archives of Singapore

The National Archives of Singapore (NAS) was established in 1968 and became part of the National Heritage Board (NHB) in August 1993. NAS is mandated by the NHB Act 1993 to be the official custodian of the government’s corporate memory. It is responsible for the permanent preservation of the nation’s records that are of national and historical significance. The NAS also acquires historical materials from private individuals and organizations to augment its official records.

To build up our collections, NAS has been actively acquiring records pertaining to the history of Singapore from both local and overseas institutions as well as from private individuals who deposited their personal papers, wartime documents, certificates and personal paraphernalia with us. For local acquisition, the sources of materials on the Chinese community come mainly from the Chinese clans, religious, and trade associations, temples, and cultural, welfare, and business organizations. The records comprise minutes of meetings, newsletters, annual reports, constitutions, souvenir magazines, membership lists, press cuttings, and photographs. These materials serve to supplement our public records that are the bulk of NAS' holdings.

The NAS also acquires records from Overseas Chinese archival institutions such as the Guangdong Provincial Archives and the Second Historical Archives of China. The former collections consist mainly of documents on Overseas Chinese activities in Guangdong Province covering the period from 1922 to 1981. The latter collections document the activities of the Chinese Overseas in Singapore and Malaya from 1908 to 1949. There are a total of 23 reels of microfilms for the two collections.
