Nanyang
Technological University Library

The Nanyang
Technological University (NTU) Library was set up in August 1981 and it
now comprises three libraries, namely, Library 1 and Library 2 and National
Institute of Education (NIE) Library. Library 1 and 2 occupy a total floor
area of 8,500 square metres.and have a seating capacity of 2,300.
The
Library houses a collection of 580,000 volumes with the bulk of the accounting,
business, economics, science and technology collection in Library 1 and
Library 2, and a strong education, humanities and science collection in
the NIE Library.
The collections
are mostly open access and classified according to the Library of Congress
classification scheme.
The Library
serves primarily an academic community of 18,000 members, who are mainly
staff and students of NTU. It also extends its resources and services
to the scholarly and research communities in Singapore.
On
1 March 1988, all functions of the Library were fully automated, utilizing
the online integrated system, DRA. Library users on both campuses can
access the OPAC (Online Public Access Catalogue) for bibliographic data
and loan status information of library materials via any of the personal
computers linked to NTU network. The Web OPAC is also available on the
Internet.
The Library
officially launched GEMS (Gateway to Electronic Media Services) on 28
April 1999. This gateway serves as a vehicle to deliver a range of information
resources campus-wide to all staff and students. The main components of
the project are as follows:
- Provision
of a one-stop access to multimedia resources.
- Electronic
submission and management of electronic documents.
- Selective
dissemination of information (SDI).
- Booking
of resources facility.
Creation of Chinese Overseas Collection Home Page
The Chinese
Overseas Collection website at http://www.ntu.edu.
sg/ library/overseas/chinese.htm was set up in June 1999, which includes
books and journals in our collection relating to Chinese Overseas and
indexes to titles of newspaper articles (from the Straits Times and Lianhe
Zaobao). It also provides links to local Chinese associations, academic,
museum, local Chinese arts and culture websites, Chinese search engines
and Chinese software download pages, etc. Another page, at http://www.ntu.edu.sg/library/overseas/shukan.htm,
categorizes the different titles in this collection by language and material
type.
In order
to allow users to have subject-searchable and keyword-searchable access
points to retrieve all library materials concerning Chinese Overseas,
we added a local subject heading, "Chinese Overseas", in the
respective bibliographic records. The content pages of some of these titles
have also been scanned and saved as PDF (Portable Document Format) files.
Links are provided in bibliographic records to allow users direct access
to the information on the content page.
